Robert Hur and the DOJ Investigation Surrounding President Joe Biden: The Associated Press reported that U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland told lawmakers on Wednesday that a report from the special counsel for the Justice Department looking into how President Joe Biden handled classified papers would be made public soon.

The investigation has been led by Robert Kyoung Hur since early last year, when Attorney General Merrick Garland called him out of retirement to become special counsel. He used to be Maryland’s top lawyer.

Garland said he was sure Hur would be able to lead the review in a “immediate and fair” way when he made the appointment.

“This appointment underscores for the public the department’s commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters, and to making decisions indisputably guided only by the facts and the law,” Garland stated last January.

Hur said in a statement after being hired that he would “conduct the assigned investigation with fair, impartial, and dispassionate judgment,” as reported by The Associated Press. “I am going to look into the facts quickly and completely, without fear or favor, and I will live up to the trust that was put in me to do this service.”

Robert Hur and the DOJ Investigation Surrounding President Joe Biden: In October, Hur talked to Vice President Biden

Hur met with the president at the White House for two days in October as part of the investigation.

As the White House has said from the start, the president and the White House are helping with the probe. At the time, White House spokesperson Iam Sams said this in a statement. “As it has been appropriate, we have provided relevant updates publicly, being as transparent as we can consistent with protecting and preserving the integrity of the investigation.”

Special counsel Jack Smith is also looking into former President Donald Trump, his alleged attempts to rig the 2020 election, and the fact that he moved highly sensitive government papers to his Florida home when his term ended. Hur’s investigation has been going on at the same time.

One big difference between the two investigations is that Biden told the police about the secret documents, while most of Trump’s were taken away by the FBI during a search of his Mar-a-Lago home and after being served with a subpoena.

How long has Robert Bur been in business?

Before he retired for a brief time, Bur was in charge of one of the busiest and largest U.S. Attorney’s offices, the District of Maryland, from 2018 to 2021.

As that person, he was in charge of bringing white supremacists, COVID-19 fund fraudsters, Asian hate crime perpetrators, and drug gang leaders to justice. Harold Martin, a former contractor for the National Security Agency, was accused of taking “breathtaking” amounts of secret information and storing them in his home in Glen Burnie, Maryland. His office worked on the long-running investigation and prosecution of Martin.

Hur got the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award for his work as a U.S. Attorney, which means he was a very good lawyer.

Before becoming the top prosecutor in Maryland, Hur worked from 2017 to 2018 as the senior associate deputy attorney general at the headquarters of the U.S. Justice Department in Washington, D.C. According to the department, Hur was a member of the top leadership team for the department and the main counselor to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. He helped Rosenstein oversee all parts of the department.

Hur got his law degree from Stanford University and was the head editor of the Stanford Law Review while he was there. After college, he worked as a law clerk for William Rehnquist, who was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court at the time.

Hur led a group that looked into crimes against Asian Americans

Hur, who is Asian American, was chosen by Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan to lead a state work group on crime against Asian Americans in March 2021. The panel was told to talk to groups that were affected by the crimes, look into crimes against Asian Americans, and come up with ways to improve police work and the prosecution of hate crimes linked to Asian Americans.

Maryland Democrats Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen praised Hur’s work to form the Baltimore Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force. This group brings together federal, state, and local police to fight violent crime in Baltimore.

Rosenstein hired Hur to be his top assistant and help oversee the work of Robert Mueller, who was special counsel at the time and led the controversial probe into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election. Hur was hired by Rosenstein while he was deputy attorney general under Trump.

The investigation followed Trump around for most of his presidency. Later, it would be written up that the president tried to stop the probe, but he wasn’t charged.

Rosenstein is connected to a lot of Hur’s work at the Justice Department. Hur hired Rosenstein as a line prosecutor in Maryland in 2007, brought him to Washington in 2017, and then suggested Rosenstein for the job as Maryland’s chief prosecutor, which is what Rosenstein did before becoming deputy attorney general.

“He understands that there are some jobs that are unpleasant but need to be done and done right,” he said.
