She was also playing basketball all year with North Tartan, an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team that played in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League, a national league. In the year before her eighth-grade season, Bueckers gained four inches.
In eighth grade, she made Hopkins’ varsity team and played for head coach Brian Cosgriff. In games, she averaged 8.9 points, 3.5 boards, 2.1 assists, and 1.4 steals. She made more three-point shots than anyone else on her team and had the second-most helpers. Hopkins had a record of 28–3 and came in second place at the Class 4A state competition. Bueckers was named to the All-Competition Team.

Brooke Bueckers played her first game as a student at Hopkins High School in 2016. In a 74-34 win over Osseo Senior High School, she scored 28 points, stole five balls, and gave out four assists. With 20.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 steals, and 4.1 assists per game, she became one of the team’s best scorers and players. She missed some games as a junior because of an ankle injury, but she finished the season scoring 22.3 points, 6.8 assists, and 5.9 rebounds per game.
Her career high was 43 points in a 69-66 win over Wayzata High School as a junior. She also scored more than 2,000 points in her career. Even though she had been sick earlier in the day and thrown up, she scored 13 points, had seven assists, grabbed five rebounds, and stole five balls as her team beat Stillwater Area High School 74-45 to win the Class 4A state title. Hopkins had a 32-0 record at the end of the season, scoring 24.4 points, 5.1 assists, 4.9 boards, and 4.6 steals per game.
In 2020, Bueckers was the first high school girl to be on the cover of the basketball magazine Slam. She missed the first game of the state competition, though, because overuse hurt her right leg and made it hard for her to train. Even so, she led Hopkins to 62 straight wins and another season without a loss.
Bueckers won the Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year award again, making him the first person to win it three times. She was named Minnesota Miss Basketball, Gatorade National Player of the Year, Naismith Prep Player of the Year, and Morgan Wootten National Player of the Year. This was her fourth year in a row winning these awards.
People think that Bueckers was one of the best high school basketball players in Minnesota history. She had a big effect on a new group of girls. Forbes gave her five stars and named her the best player in the 2020 class.

In her first game as a college student, on December 12, 2020, against UMass Lowell, her team beat them 79–23. Bueckers had 17 points, nine boards, five assists, and five steals. In a 94–62 win over St. John’s of New York, she scored 32 points and had seven assists, which was the most by a UConn rookie since Tina Charles in 2007. In a 63–59 OT win over South Carolina, the number one team in the AP Poll, she also had 31 points, six steals, and five assists.
In a 97–68 win over Butler on February 27, Bueckers had 20 points, 14 assists, and seven boards. That was a school record. She won Big East Player of the Year and consensus Big East Freshman of the Year after leading UConn to the regular-season title. Maya Moore is the only other player to win both awards in the same season. She was also picked by everyone for the first team of All-Big East and the All-Freshman Team of Big East.
In March 2021, Bueckers led his team to a 102–59 win over 16th-seeded High Point in the first round of the 2021 NCAA tournament. He had 24 points, nine boards, six assists, and four steals. In an Elite Eight win over second-seeded Baylor, she scored 28 points, which was the most in the game. This helped UConn make it to its 13th straight Final Four.
United Connecticut lost to Arizona 69–59 in the Final Four. They had a 28–2 record for the season. In the Final Four, she was named to the All-Tournament Team and won every national player of the year award she could.
Bueckers made 46.4 percent of his three-point shots and scored 20 points, 5.8 assists, 4.9 boards, and 2.3 steals per game. Even though the season was cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic, she had 168 assists, which is the most by a student in the school’s history. Her name was given the ESPY Award for Best Female College Athlete in July 2021. Analysts have said that her first season was one of the best in UConn and NCAA history.
Azzi Bueckers, a basketball player for UConn, had surgery on her right ankle in 2021 to fix an osteochondral flaw. By October, she was cleared to play again, and going into her junior year, she was picked by everyone as the Big East Preseason Player of the Year and an AP Preseason All-America.
In her first game of the season, on November 14, 2021, against Arkansas, she scored 34 points, grabbed six boards, and passed the ball four times, which was the high point of her career. Kerry Bascom set the school record for most points in the first game of the season in 1989, which she tied. She hurt her left knee while dribbling the ball up the court with 40 seconds left in a 73–54 win over Notre Dame on December 5, 2021. Her friends had to carry her off the court. UConn had a 15–4 record while Bueckers was away and fell out of the top 10 in the AP Poll for the first time since 2005. The team lost to Georgia Tech and Villanova, ending winning runs of 240 games against unranked teams and 169 games against league opponents.
When Bueckers was allowed to play again against St. John’s on February 25, 2022, it was the first time in her career that she came off the bench. She didn’t get much playing time until the NCAA tournament. Even though she only scored two points in the final game against Villanova, UConn won the Big East tournament.
Aside from her sports awards, Bueckers was also on the dean’s list for her first semester as a junior at the university. On August 3, 2022, UConn revealed that Bueckers had torn the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee during a pick-up game on August 1. She would not be able to play in any games during the 2022–23 season. After redshirting the season, she got an extra year of college eligibility.
She was named an AP preseason All-American and the Big East poll player of the year during her redshirt junior year. In her first game of the season, on November 8, she scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds, and passed the ball four times in 21 minutes during a 102–58 win over Dayton.
At the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Women’s Americas Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Bueckers played for the United States. At the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Minsk, Belarus, she did the same. She scored 11.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game at the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand. That was the most in the event.
At the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in October, the Bueckers won a gold title in 3×3 basketball for the United States. She also helped her team win all seven of its games.

Bob Bueckers is Bueckers’ father. He is a software engineer and was a point guard in high school. Cross country and track and field for the University of St. Thomas were things her mother, Amy Fuller (née Dettbarn), did.
Bueckers’ parents split up when she was three years old. She stayed with her dad while her mom got married again and moved to Billings, Montana. Dad got together with someone new and later had a son named Drew. There is a younger brother named Ryan and a younger sister named Lauren.
She is a Christian and says that God gives her courage and helps her do well on the basketball court.
Her “Buckets with Bueckers” basketball workshop for kids in Minnesota and Montana was a charity event.
Part of the reason Bueckers supports the Black Lives Matter movement is that her brother Drew, who she calls her best friend, is of mixed race. After George Floyd was killed in her home state of Minnesota, she took part in marches for social justice.
