Meta Begins Testing AI Chatbot on Instagram and WhatsApp: In India, Meta is testing its artificial intelligence chatbot Meta AI across Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.

Through Instagram’s direct messaging feature, Meta AI is available.

The Meta AI chatbot can be accessed by tapping on the Meta AI icon in the search bar and interacting directly with it. Like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, it answers a wide range of questions, including real-time information, and functions as a general-purpose assistant.

In the footnote of the answer, the assistant provides a link to the Google search results page for the specific query.

Among other things, one can generate text and images, summarise long texts, proofread and edit, translate texts from one language to another, and compose poems and stories.

It’s also possible to ask questions or ask advice through Instagram’s existing personal and group chats. The chatbot will then offer options directly in the chat. You can type “@” and then tap Meta AI to converse with the bot. For instance, one can ask for recommendations for a group trip or dinner party recipes.

“Our generative AI-powered experiences are under development in varying phases, and we’re testing a range of them publicly in a limited capacity” said Meta.

Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, which together have over a billion monthly users, dominate the Indian market for Meta’s family of apps.

As part of its push into generative AI, Meta introduced Meta AI in September 2023.

A custom AI model based on Llama 2, the company’s open-source large language model (LLM), powers Meta AI.

As the firm strives to be a prominent player in the AI race with tech giants like Google, and Microsoft, and upstarts like OpenAI, the firm said it is infusing these capabilities into its applications — Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger — used by over 3 billion people every day.
