In 2003, Balaji was selected to play for the Indian national cricket team as a fast-medium bowler. In the match against Kings XI Punjab in Chennai on May 10, 2008, he achieved the first hat-trick of the Indian Premier League tournament. He took five wickets to cap off the evening, which enabled his team to win the match.
