Bill Gates Terminates Foundation Staff Over Generative AI Copilot: Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, laid off the Gates Foundation today and replaced it with Copilot, a Microsoft AI solution.

According to a computer-generated letter sent to staff, he said:

Any new technology that’s so disruptive is bound to make people nervous, and artificial intelligence is no exception. The Gates Foundation works on a bunch of issues that can benefit from artificial intelligence. With company-wide agents, employees can be empowered in new ways. Microsoft calls it a copilot. AI will help you get more done.

Despite Gates’ admission, generative AI is biased just like the people he employed at the Foundation. And unlike humans, GenAI doesn’t ask for vacations, raises, or about your friends.

Gates said in a previous interview that GenAI will have a positive impact on philanthropy in 2024:

Getting the most out of every dollar spent is all about innovation in a world with limited resources. With AI, new discoveries will be accelerated like never before. There’s no doubt that AI can help people with mental health, education, and more.

Other major donors were surprised by the Gates Foundation’s decision to replace all staff with AI. They acknowledged that it’s very difficult to hire staff with AI skills, even government regulators tasked with managing AI innovations often cannot afford to hire staff tasked with creating AI regulations.

Unlike Gates, the White House has issued an Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence requiring the federal government to create an AI and Technology Talent Task Force to hire AI-enabled talent.

Actually, USAID already has a Human Intelligence Initiative with Apple, Amazon, and Google. As part of a Government-wide AI talent surge, USAID is also hiring a Chief Data Officer to help agencies advance their data and technology strategies and place key AI and AI-enabling talent in high-priority areas.
