Amar Bose Biography & Profile

The early life of Amar Bose: His parents, Noni Gopal Bose (an Indian) and Charlotte Mechlin (an American) brought him into the world in Philadelphia. His mother taught elementary school and has roots in both France and Germany. His dad was an Indian freedom fighter who, after incarceration for his activism, escaped Bengal in the 1920s.

At the age of thirteen, Bose demonstrated his aptitude for business and interest in electronics by starting a small home company fixing model trains and home radios to help support his family during the war.

Education of Amar Bose

Bose attended MIT after finishing high school in Abington, Pennsylvania, and earned a BS (Bachelor of Science) in Electrical Engineering there in the early 1950s. While in India on a Fulbright research scholarship, Bose met the woman who would become his first wife during his year at Philips Natuurkundig Laboratorium in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Under the guidance of Norbert Wiener and Yuk-Wing Lee, he pursued his Ph.D. from MIT in Electrical Engineering. His dissertation was on non-linear systems.

Personal life of Amar Bose 

He wed Prema Bose, however, their marriage ended in divorce. Vanu and Maya were their two offspring. Kamala was his only grandchild. Amar Bose did not profess any religion, but he did engage in a daily brief meditation. Vanu Inc., a provider of software-defined radio technology, was established by Vanu Bose, who also served as its CEO.

Bose passed away in Wayland, Massachusetts, on July 12, 2013, at the age of 83.

The career of Amar Bose

After finishing college, Amar Bose took a position as an associate lecturer at MIT. In 1956, when Bose was just starting as a professor, he purchased a strong stereo speaker system and was dismayed to hear that despite their great technical specs, the systems could not capture the energy and authenticity of a live show.

As a result, he began an in-depth investigation of speaker technologies, focusing on the primary flaws of existing state-of-the-art audio equipment.

Through his studies of acoustics, he was able to design a stereo loudspeaker that could recreate, in a home environment, the reflected sound field that is characteristic of the listening space of the spectators in a performance hall.

Later, his company’s audio equipment became known for its emphasis on psychoacoustics.
