The people got rid of William Belknap on March 2, 1876. Belknap’s shady financial dealings were looked into because he was known for throwing expensive parties and living a luxurious life. There was evidence that he was involved in a plan that went back to 1870. In exchange for kickbacks, his wife helped a dishonest friend get a job at a military trading post.

In 1876, as the House of Representatives found evidence of corruption, Belknap quit just minutes before a vote to remove him from office. The House did, however, agree on five articles of impeachment and sent them to the Senate. These articles accused Belknap of “criminally disregarding his duty as Secretary of War and basely prostituting his high office to his lust for private gain,” according to the Senate.

Early in April, the Senate held its trial with more than 40 witnesses. House managers urged that Belknap should not be able to get away with murder by resigning. A majority of senators voted against all of Belknap’s charges, but he was found not guilty because they did not have the needed two-thirds majority. It was a sudden death from a huge heart attack in Washington, D.C., on October 12, 1890.

If passed by a House that is very split, Mayorkas would be the second Cabinet member to be removed from office in US history and the first since 1876, when Secretary of War William Belknap was removed.
