Walmart has stores all over the world, so the company made Route Optimization, a logistics-focused AI technology that helps the business get the most out of its loads and routes.

Walmart said the tech saved 94 million pounds of CO2 by getting rid of 30 million miles that weren’t needed and making routes better so that 110,000 routes that weren’t working well were skipped.

“We have invested significant time, resources, and operational know-how into building solutions like Route Optimization, but that can be a barrier for many businesses,” said Anshu Bhardwaj, SVP and COO of Walmart Global Tech and Walmart Commerce Technologies in a news release. “By adopting our at-scale, AI-powered tech, businesses can eliminate the need and expense of developing their own technology, and instead focus on what they do best — serve their customers.”

Walmart’s Commerce Technology business now offers Route Optimization as software as a service (SaaS). Store Assist is a service that Walmart started offering to retailers in April 2023 to help them with local fulfillment. This service helps retailers ship, pick up, and deliver things. Walmart has made a second SaaS from services it already has.

As an example, Route Optimization can plan routes with multiple stops, make sure that trailers are loaded and changed in the best way to make sure they arrive on time, load returning trailers so they don’t sit empty, and give operations managers logistics insights.
