Vinay made his debut in the film industry with the romantic comedy Fire, directed by Deepa Mehta and released in 1996. The films Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega (2000), starring Salman Khan, featured him in supporting roles, but the role that established him as a leading actor was in the sensual thriller Jism (2003, with Salman Khan).
