Born in Los Angeles, California, on December 31, 1959, Kilmer was the second of Gladys Swanette’s three boys. His mother, Gladys Swanette (née Ekstadt), died in 2019 and his father, Eugene Dorris Kilmer (1921–1993) died in 1993. He got his Swedish roots from his mother. Besides that, he has Irish, German, and Cherokee roots.

When he was eight years old, his parents split up. In 1970, his mother got married to William Bernard Leach.
