Remembering Greg McCowan
When the event happened, 43-year-old Deputy McCowan was stopping a car in the 4900 block of Sevierville Road in Maryville, Tennessee. Even though police tried to talk to the suspect, Kenneth Dehart, he allegedly refused to cooperate. He then made things worse by firing shots, killing Deputy McCowan and hurting Deputy Shelby Eggers.
Sheriff James Lee Berrong was very sad about the death of Deputy McCowan and said that he was a star in both life and death. McCowan started working as a deputy in 2020 and was admired for how hard he worked and how well he served the community. In 2021, he was praised for saving the life of a guy trapped in a burning car, which showed how brave and selfless he was.
Dehart is being actively sought by the Blount County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies. He is wanted on warrants for first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and having a gun while being a criminal. A prize of more than $60,000 has been offered for information that leads to Dehart’s arrest. This shows how important it is to catch the suspect as soon as possible.
As the search for Dehart gets tougher, the police have asked people to stay alert and report any sightings of him. People are told not to get close to the suspect because he is armed and could hurt them. Instead, people are told to call the police right away if they know anything about where Dehart is.
The sad death of Deputy Greg McCowan has shocked the whole community and brought attention to the dangers that police officers face every day on the job. The Blount County Sheriff’s Office is still dedicated to getting justice for Deputy McCowan and his family and keeping the community safe and healthy. The case is still going on, and the suspect is still being sought.
