“Parliamentary committees do not have the right to probe criminal cases”: Mahua Moitra

Written Posted on

New Delhi: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has made a special demand from the Ethics Committee of the Lok Sabha. She has said that she wants businessman Darshan Hiranandani to be investigated in a better way in this whole matter. If necessary, he should also be cross-examined. Moitra has made this demand by writing a letter to the Ethics Committee of Parliament. She has also claimed that parliamentary committees have no right to investigate criminal cases. Only investigating agencies can do this.

Notably, Mahua Moitra has made this demand at a time when she had to appear before the Ethics Committee in this matter tomorrow i.e. on November 2. Mahua Moitra is accused of taking money from a businessman and asking questions in the Parliament and also shared her login password of the Parliament with him.

BJP leader Nishikant Dubey and lawyer Dehadrai recorded their statement.

It is noteworthy that BJP leader Nishikant Dubey and lawyer Jai Ananth Dehadrai have already appeared before the Ethics Committee in this matter. Both of them had appeared before the Ethics Committee a few days ago and also presented their side. Only after listening to both of them, the Ethics Committee had asked Moitra to appear on October 31. After which Mahua Moitra had requested the Ethics Committee to call her only after November 5. But the Ethics Committee has asked her to appear on November 2.

BJP attacking TMC

The BJP leaders have been attacking Moitra and her party – TMC since the the matter surfaced. Just a few days ago, BJP leader Nishikant Dubey had once again targeted Moitra and shared a post on the social media platform saying she is a member of the Standing Committee and she would have read the rules.

Dubey questions Moitra’s intentions

Dubey has raised questions on the intentions of Mahua Moitra in another post? He wrote, “When an MP gets the Parliament email ID or member portal, we enter into an agreement with the NIC. The very first point of this is that this email ID password will be kept confidential. Not shared with anyone. She signed this agreement after thinking carefully. Did the person with degree read it or not or did she sell the security of the country for a few rupees?”
