New Study Suggests AI, Robots, and New Tech in Workplace Deteriorate Quality of Life

AI in Workplace Deteriorate Quality of Life: Nearly 5000 United Kingdom workers benefit from laptops, computers, and other technology.

4,802 UK workers between the ages of 18 and 30 were surveyed online between May 22 and June 30, 2023.

Participants’ well-being was measured using five operationalized dimensions: mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression.

The analysis examined the effects of four types of technology on well-being, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technology.

As a second group, digital information and communication technologies were analyzed along with wearables and remote sensing technologies, including computers, laptops, tablets, etc. Lastly, automated tools, equipment, machines, and robotics technologies such as robots, drones, and devices that automate processes were analyzed.

In three of these categories: robotics, wearable trackers, and software based on artificial intelligence and machine learning, workers’ health and welfare tended to deteriorate in proportion to their exposure to technology. The use of more traditional ICTs (information and communication technologies) at work, however, has been shown to improve well-being.

A constant evaluation of newer technology is important for understanding how it affects UK workers.

In the future, technology could improve living, work, and overall well-being, but coordinated efforts across departments and domains are needed.

According to the authors, earlier research indicated that job insecurity, increased workload, routineization, loss of meaning at work, and disempowerment and loss of autonomy are all detrimental to employee wellbeing.

IFOW, a research and development organization dedicated to understanding how technology is changing work, conducted a study called “Does technology use impact the quality of life of UK workers?”.
