Early Life

George Tyler Moore and Marjorie Hackett welcomed Mary Tyler Moore into the world on December 29, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York. She was raised in the Brooklyn Flatbush neighborhood in an Irish-Catholic home alongside a younger brother and sister, who sadly died at the ages of 21 and 47, respectively, before her. When she was eight years old, her family moved to Los Angeles, California, and she continued her education at Brooklyn’s Lima Parochial School until the third grade.

Moore went back to Saint Ambrose School to finish her education before attending Immaculate Heart High School in the Los Feliz district. She appeared on television for the first time in the 1950s, doing commercials for Hotpoint appliances. Within five days, she appeared in 39 advertisements and was paid almost $6,000. Moore, when eighteen, wed salesperson Richard Meeker in 1955. Meeker was ten years her senior. Due to her pregnancy with Richard Carleton Meeker, Jr., her first and only child, she was fired from her position at Hotpoint. The pair didn’t get married until 1962.

Career

Moore had a brief part as a nurse in Jack Lemmon’s 1957 “Operation Mad Ball,” which marked her cinematic debut. In Richard Diamond’s 1959 “Private Detective,” she portrayed a seductive but enigmatic phone receptionist, whose face was never visible. This was her first regular appearance on television. In 1961, she landed her first speaking role in a motion picture with “X-15.”

Moore’s big break came when she was cast as Laura Petrie in the venerable comedy “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” Known as one of the smartest and funniest sitcoms in American history, it aired on television for five seasons from 1961 and 1966. In 1970, the pair established MTM Enterprises, a television production firm that went on to produce “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” Moore’s next most well-known project. Between 1970 and 1977, the show ran for seven seasons and won a total of 29 Emmy Awards. Moore also won a Golden Globe and three Emmys. She made multiple appearances on Broadway as well.

September 19, 1980, Moore returned to the big screen in “Ordinary People,” a film in which she portrayed a mother lamenting her son’s untimely death. On November 23, 1983, Moore wed cardiologist Robert Levine at the Pierre Hotel in New York City. On September 8, 1992, she was awarded a star at the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame, located at 7021.

She made a guest appearance on Ellen DeGeneres’ “The Ellen Show” in 2001, and in a reunion special in 2004, she was reunited with her former co-stars from “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” Since May 8, 2002, a bronze statue of her has stood at the Minneapolis crossroads.

Personal Life

Since 1969, the actress has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Her two memoirs, written in 1995 and 2009, were published. In the first, “After All,” she discussed her admission that she was in recovery from alcoholism, and in the second, “Growing Up Again: Life, Loves, and Oh Yeah, Diabetes,” she discussed her life following her type 1 diabetes diagnosis.
