Mary Kom is a former Member of Parliament from India’s Upper House (Rajya Sabha) in addition to being a well-known amateur boxer in her own country.

Introduction of Mary Kom: Mary Kom is the only boxer to win eight medals at the World Championships and the only person to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times. She was born on November 24th, 1982.

She also has the unique distinction of being the only World Champion. For the 2012 Summer Olympics, she will make history as the first Indian female boxer to do so. She won the bronze medal in the flyweight (51 kg) event. Magnificent Mary is a nickname for her.

On top of all that, she was ranked as the best female light-flyweight boxer in the world by the International Boxing Association (amateur) (AIBA).

During the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, she became the first Indian female boxer to win a gold medal.

The early life of Mary Kom

Kom was born in the Kagathei community in rural Manipur, India (specifically the Churachandpur region). Manipur is home to Moirang Lamkhai. Her ancestry is traced back to a poor branch of the Kom religion. Their parents, Mangte Tonpa Kom and Mangte Akham Kom were jhum tenant farmers.

They ultimately settled on Chungneijang as her given name. Kom grew up in a modest family, where she helped on the farm and with other chores while still going to school playing sports, and training as a boxer.

Kom’s father used to be a professional wrestler. She is the eldest of three children, with a younger sister and brother both younger than herself. Her close-knit family is deeply rooted in the Christian and Baptist faiths.

The career of Mary Kom

When the 2010 Asian Women’s Boxing Championships were held in Kazakhstan, Kom took home the gold. At the 2010 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, which took place in Barbados, she also triumphed, taking home the gold medal.

A sixth consecutive title victory her. She had to compete in the 48 kg category in Barbados since AIBA had eliminated the 46 kg class.

At the 2010 Asian Games, she competed in the 51-kilogram event. She finished in third place. Gold in the 48-kilogram class at the 2011 Asian Women’s Cup, held in China.

She, along with Sanjay and Harshit Jain, was honored to carry the Queen’s Baton at the 2010 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on October 3 at the stadium.

Delhi served as the venue for the games. However, she did not compete since women’s boxing was not included in the Commonwealth Games.

The Chinese boxer Chang Yuan beat out Kom in the semi-finals of the 2021 Asian Boxing Olympic Qualifying Tournament, which took place in August.
