Manhar Early Years and Education
Singers Pankaj Udhas and Nirmal Udhas’ older brother Manhar Udhas is the eldest child of Keshubhai Udhas and Jituben Udhas. He graduated from Gujarat’s mechanical engineering program, then relocated to Mumbai in the late 1960s to hunt for work. Since he was young, he has had a passion for music.
He met Music Director Kalyanji Anandji through his brother-in-law, who was producing a Gujarati movie in Mumbai. Udhas used to spend time with Kalyanji Anandji and help them record songs. Mukesh, the vocalist, was once unavailable right away.
Therefore, it was agreed to record the song in Udhas’ voice and have Mukesh later sing over it. For the 1969 movie Vishwas, the song was “aap se humko bichhade hue zamana beet gaya.” Mukesh commented after hearing the song that Udhas had sung it flawlessly and that he didn’t need to record it in his voice. The song achieved success. It ended up being a career-changing event for him.

Manhar Udhas’s Career and Music
Manhar has collaborated with numerous film composers and provided the voices of numerous Bollywood heroes. More than 300 films, including ones in Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, and Punjabi, included his singing.
His brother Pankaj and he both excel at singing Ghazals. He has 30 albums (the last one, “Aashirwad,” launched in Australia in November 2013). He and Pankaj have collaborated on albums and live performances. On January 18, 2015, in Vadodara, he released his 31st album, Alankar, during VadFest.
