IND vs SA 2nd T20: Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar weighed in on spinner Ravi Bishnoi being left out of the Indian team for the second T20 match against South Africa. Bishnoi did not play even though he has a high ranking among T20 international bowlers.
Gavaskar agreed that Bishnoi is currently rated the number-one T20I bowler in the world. But he said players also get rested in modern cricket’s packed schedule. He does not think there should be an outcry over Bishnoi’s omission in one match.
The article notes that some fans and experts questioned why India would drop Bishnoi when he is at the top of the T20 bowling rankings. The second match was also played on a surface in Guwahati favoring spin bowlers.
But Gavaskar said resting players routinely happens now when teams play many matches close together. He pointed out that batting star Surya Kumar Yadav was also rested for the second T20I. So dropping Bishnoi for one match should not be a big issue.
Gavaskar suggests there is no reason to overanalyze leaving out someone like Bishnoi for only one less important bilateral game. It allows another player to get a chance while giving leading players a break between tournaments.
