Himachal's Sub-Zero Saga Amid Snowfall and Rain

Himachal’s Sub-Zero Saga Amid Snowfall and Rain: Shimla residents woke up to a beautiful sight on Friday: the whole town was covered in snow. However, the sleet on the roads made it hard for people to get to and from work.

There are problems with 2,243 transformers and up to 720 roads in Himachal Pradesh because of the snow. Four of these roads are national highways. Information from the state emergency operation center shows that 250 roads are closed in Shimla district, 163 in Chamba, 139 in Lahaul and Spiti, 67 in Kullu, 54 in Mandi, and 46 in Kinnaur district.

Some roads that led to Rohru, Chopal, Narkanda, Khadrala, and other places were closed, which stopped vehicle traffic in those parts of upper Shimla.

Minimum temperatures dropped sharply because of snow and widespread rain. People living in high-altitude tribe areas shivered in a piercing cold wave where the mercury stayed 14 to 18 degrees Celsius below freezing.

Minister of the Public Works Department Vikramaditya Singh told reporters on Friday that machinery from low areas was moved to snow-covered areas as a proactive move. Calcium chloride was also sprinkled on the roads to clear them.

Calcium chloride, an ionic salt that is crystalline and white and is made up of calcium and chlorine, melts snow as soon as it comes in touch with it. Since it costs Rs 500 per kilometer for a single lane, the process is a good deal.

Snowfall is good for drinking and irrigation projects, farmers, gardeners, and tourists, but Singh said that the best efforts would be made to clear the roads. He also said that Rs 72 crore was set aside on Thursday to fix the roads.

The weather report said that Triund got 75 cm of new snow overnight, while Narkanda and Shikari Devi were covered in a 60-cm thick blanket of snow. Kamrunag and Chansel got 45 cm of snow each, Shilaroo got 42.6 cm, Kothi and Khadrala got 35 cm, and Pangi, Jot, Bara Bhangal, Bir-Billing, Kapla, Parashar lake, Kufri, Khara-Patthar, and Kufri all got 30 cm.

It also said that Shimla, the capital of the state, got 5 cm of snow and a low of -6 degrees Celsius.

According to the weather report, the lowest temperature was -13.8 degrees Celsius in Kusumseri. It was -7 degrees Celsius in Kalpa, -6 degrees Celsius in Narkanda and Manali, -5 degrees Celsius in Sumdo, and -3 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie.

It rained a lot in the middle and lower hills. Nagrota Suriyan had the most rain in the state, with 57 mm. Slapper came in second with 45 mm, Kahu and Ghaghas each with 38 mm, Jogindernagar with 35 mm, and Berthin with 32 mm.

Due to a new disturbance in the western hemisphere, the local weather station has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning in some areas on February 3 and 4. They also expect that the state will be wet until February 6.
