Amalija Knavs was a textile worker. She was born in Slovenia, which was once a part of communist Yugoslavia. In 2018, the Knavses became US citizens in an unusual way: their adult daughter sponsored them to become citizens, which was a method that Donald Trump himself said was wrong.
When their grandson Barron Trump was born in 2006, the Knavses’ ties to the United States grew stronger. They had a home in Sevnica, Slovenia, where Melania went to elementary school, but they spent most of their time in New York.
Even though the citizenship process was controversial, Amalija Knavs’ love for her family was clear. Her death marked the end of an era for the Trump family. Both Melania and Donald Trump paid respect to her, calling her a “incredible woman” and saying they were sad that she had gone to a “beautiful place in the sky.”
