It is a tracking application that monitors COVID-19 cases by utilising the GPS and Bluetooth capabilities of the smartphone. Both iOS and Android mobile operating systems support the app. By scanning a database of reported cases across India, Bluetooth tries to assess the risk if a user has been close to (within six feet of) a COVID-19-infected individual.
Based on the data provided, it assesses whether the location one is in is a part of the infected areas using location information. The Indian government previously released an app called Corona Kavach, which has since been discontinued.

This app is an updated version of that app. Within three days of its release, Aarogya Setu had received five million downloads, making it one of the most widely used official apps in India.

The federal government mandated that all employees download and utilise the app in an order issued on April 29, 2020, stating that they must “check their status on Aarogya Setu before reporting to work and commute only when the app indicates safe or low risk.

All departing passengers must be registered with the Aarogya Setu app, according to a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that the Airport Authority of India published on May 21, 2020. It was also stated that youngsters under the age of 14 would not be required to use the app.
The following day, however, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri made it clear that no passenger will be required to use the app.

The Aarogya Setu app code was made available to developers worldwide on May 26, 2020, to aid other nations in managing contact tracing as they battle the COVID-19 pandemic. The Co-WIN portal was connected with the app in March 2021.
