Israel–Hamas War 2023

Israel–Hamas War 2023: At the United Nations, India voted to support a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution stated that the UN Security Council and other nations should help bring an end to violence between Israel and Palestinian armed groups in Gaza.

The United States had earlier blocked many UN statements on the situation. This resolution was proposed by China, Tunisia, and Norway. It passed with 14 Security Council members voting yes. Only the US abstained from voting.

India’s UN representative T.S. Tirumurti explained India’s vote. He said India condemns violence in Gaza that has killed many civilians, especially children. India is also providing humanitarian aid to Palestine. Tirumurti stressed dialogue is the only solution, as violence will only breed more violence in the region.

The resolution calls for respecting existing ceasefire mediation efforts involving Egypt and others. It also urges allowing unfettered access to humanitarian supplies and workers in Gaza, which is under economic blockade. The measure is unlikely to pressure Israel or Hamas into an immediate truce. But it signals global concern over the humanitarian crisis.

So in summary – India voted at the UN to support demanding an immediate end to violence in Gaza through a Security Council resolution. India cited concerns over civilian deaths and said only dialogue, not violence, could bring peace.
