Dan Buettner says that breakfast is a must in blue zones, which are places where people live the longest and have the best life expectancies. This suggests that breakfast may help people live longer.

“Everyone should eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper,” says Buettner.

“People in blue zones eat the biggest meal of the day for breakfast and then smaller meals throughout the day. They often eat dinner early and don’t eat again until breakfast the next day.”

He also points out that breakfast in blue zones is not the same as breakfast in the United States.

In the United States, pop tarts, sugary cereals, yogurts, and cookies are sold as breakfast foods. But Buettner says that people should stay away from these foods. “Instead, people should eat a tough, healthy breakfast like they do in the blue zones.”

If you often skip breakfast and feel like your mood or sleep isn’t better than you’d like, there may be a link.

A study done in 2023 with more than 700 college students found that not eating breakfast was linked to changes in sleep patterns and more depressive signs, both of which made sleep less good. Researchers say that skipping breakfast didn’t have a big effect on the quality of sleep, but there was a clear difference between people who skipped breakfast and those who ate it every day.

A smaller study with 66 healthy people in their 20s found that how often someone ate breakfast was linked to changes in their mood, how well they slept, and even their eating habits. “Better perceived sleep quality, mood upon waking, and alertness upon waking compared to those that skip breakfast,” the study said of people who always ate breakfast.
