World Stroke Day : World stroke day which is celebrated every year on 29 October, With the aim of raising awareness about strokes, their prevention, treatment, and the importance of taking action to reduce the incidence and impact of strokes. Let’s delve into the complex world of strokes, shedding light on the intricacies of this neurological emergency. A Stroke or a Brain attack defined as the sudden onset of brain tissue damage or due to blockage of a blood vessel either rupture of a blood vessel and it is a neurological emergency. It is the second most common cause in world after heart disease. It takes human to death and disability. But the burden of stroke on the family is much more than that of heart disease. A data from previous years revealed that one in every fourth person will have a stroke in his lifetime.

About Stroke

A stroke which is also called a brain attack, This means the blood supply to the brain will be stopped suddenly due to blockage in the blood vessels. It can be a sudden block or burst of a blood vessel. The  blockage of blood vessels will mostly take place due to several reasons over a certain period of time. There are many signs of stroke such as weakness of numbness in the arm, face and leg. Also sudden confusion, trouble speaking, difficulty understanding speech, dizziness, loss of balance, and trouble walking. The effects of Stroke will be permanent or temporary damage to part of the brain causing death or long-term disability of body parts.

Types of Strokes

There are mostly two types of stroke

  1. Ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke
  2. In ischemic stroke there is blockage of a blood vessel supplying the brain due to a thrombus following cholesterol deposition or due to a clot arising from the heart chambers or from the vessels pumping blood from the heart into the brain. This constitutes 87% of all strokes.
  3. And in hemorrhagic stroke there is a rupture of a blood vessel supplying the brain which leads to accumulation of blood in the brain tissue or surrounding the brain. This constitutes 13% of all strokes.

Risk factor of Strokes

A stroke can be occur due to genetic causes. Elderly males, postmenopausal females, black race are all at a higher risk for stroke and also some other common risk factors include obesity, lack of physical activity, consumption of tobacco and smoking cigarettes, diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and disorders of heart valves or heart rhythm.

The world stroke day which is celebrated in October 29 every year? The theme which is set by the WSO for world stroke day is “together we are greater than stroke” which highlights the importance of the prevention of stroke by managing modifiable risk factors of a stroke. It also emphasizes on quick symptom recognition and early treatment initiation.
