UN Arabic Language Day: The UN Arabic Language Day is celebrated yearly on 18th December every year. This day was established by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the year 2010 to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to encourage the equivalent use of all six of its official languages through the Organization.

The reason behind choosing 18th December for Arabic Language Day is because, on this day in the year 1973, the General Assembly acknowledged the Arabic language as an official UN language.

About UN Arabic Language Day and Its History

On 18th December 1993, the United Nations acknowledged the Arabic language as one of six official UN languages And recognized its importance and widespread use throughout the world. Arabic which is world’s one of the most ancient languages and the sixth most commonly spoken language in the world, Arabic language which is arising in the Proto-Semitic languages of the Middle East in the seventh century.

The word ‘Arab’ means ‘nomad’, which indicates the language’s roots in the nomadic tribes of today’s Arabian Peninsula.

Most of the knowledge of classical Arabic comes from the Quran, which is Islam’s holy book. The scripture is the first main record of the written Arabic language, and it also gives a valuable understanding of the structure of the old language. Today, over one billion Muslims study the Arabic language to read the Quran in its original language.

Similar to other Semitic languages, the Arabic language is also written from right to left and contains some sounds that do not exist in English or other languages. Arabic’s beautiful ‘alphabet’ is not an alphabet at all, at least not in the spoken sense which we are used to. In the abjad writing system, every symbol stands for a consonant, with accents which are giving the vowel sounds.

Alternate capital letters, and significance which is created through the use of quotation marks. The many words are set up from a basic, thematically related root.

All the words related to writing, like, which contain the letters k, t, and b are made larger with additional word parts. In that way, you can acknowledge a word’s category in the world by studying its root.

However, learning the Arabic language may challenge for the average English speaker, we should also thank Arabic for several vital and useful English words, like algebra, alcohol, coffee, loofah, tariff, cotton, and many more English words that came from Arabic language.
