RK Damani was born to a family of artisans who made pottery and textiles. Damani grew up in a rural area and began his artistic training at the age of eleven. Damani’s early education took place at the Mumbai Scottish School, a British-based international school.

Damani is married to Shri Kanta Devi, with whom he has three children. In 1977, Damani enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, where he received a B.S. in electrical engineering. Damani has worked as a professor at the University of California, Davis since 1995, where he is currently the John C. Hennessy Professor of Computer Science.

He is also the founder and director of the Institute for Parallel, Distributed, and Network-Based Systems.
