In Los Angeles, Waithe started her job as an assistant to the chief producer of the sitcom Girlfriends. Later, she worked as a writer for a number of TV shows. She wrote and starred in the YouTube show “Twenties” and directed the short film “Save Me.” In 2014, Variety named Waithe one of the “10 Comedians to Watch.”

In 2015, Showtime ordered a pilot for the show “The Chi,” which was written by Waithe and directed by Common. The show is about a young Black American guy coming of age in the city, and it focuses on how diverse her neighborhood is. As co-chair of the Committee of Black Writers at the Writers Guild, Waithe also used her power to help the Black American community in the entertainment business.

When Waithe met Master of None’s author and lead actor Aziz Ansari in 2015, she was cast in the show. Ansari changed the script to make the character more like Waithe. For the season 2 episode “Thanksgiving,” she and Ansari won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
