Exploring Kolkata’s Inaugural Underwater Tunnel Aquarium: For Christmas, Park Circus Maidan is full of fish tanks with fish of all sizes, shapes, and colours. The tanks are open for kids and adults alike to enjoy. Park Circus Maidan has always had fun things to do in the winter, like fairs with rides and food stands and clowns. But Kolkata’s first “Underwater Tunnel Aquarium” is the newest and most interesting thing to see.

In keeping with the holiday spirit, two Santa Clauses are waiting for people to come into the tunnel. There are fish tanks all around you and above you once you get into the underwater world. Take your time and look at each fish as you walk. Find the Black Tetra, which is also known as the Widow, and a group of small, brightly colored fish. A wide range of fish, from baby sharks to goldfish, live in rows of individual tanks. People often call this fish “Flowerhorn,” and it is very pretty with a big red head. Young people were mesmerized by the show when My Kolkata went there on a lovely Saturday afternoon.

After seeing the underwater world on social media, a family from Baranagar came all the way to enjoy it. “We saw a few reels on the underwater aquarium and decided to go,” a woman who loved the Widow told the crowd. The woman was there with her parents, sister, and child.

A big fish with a mouth that looks like a crocodile can be seen near the end of the tube. It’s called Arapaima. The crowd was also interested in this fish. When you come out of the tube, you’ll be in a brightly lit tent with lots of bright colors. Inside, you can see real sculptures of many sea animals, such as a huge octopus, a mermaid, an alligator, and a snake. Kids can play and explore this fun area with lifelike animal models for as long as they want. In the middle of this area is a Christmas tree, which makes it a great place for selfies and pictures.

One of the guests, Rela Fenate, works as an administrator at the Presbyterian Church in Kolkata. He was there with his wife and daughter, who had come down from Mizoram to see him and her kids. That was a great time for the kids, and Rela is very happy. Rela said that they read about the aquarium online and decided that he and his grandkids had to go there.

The tank is run by brothers Atishaam and Ayaz Alam, who make sure it stays clean and in good shape. “We use six tankers of freshwater every day, and we keep changing and filtering the water to protect the health of our aquatic residents and keep it from getting dirty.” Our group of four doctors gives the fish regular checkups to see how they’re eating and how healthy they are overall. “Only the doctors are allowed to feed them,” they said.

The Park Circus Maidan gate that is closest to the seven-point crossing is also the gate that leads to the aquarium. Through January 10, the Underwater Tunnel Aquarium will be open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the week and until 11 p.m. on the weekends. Most of the time, the crowd gets bigger after 6 p.m. For just Rs 100, each person can enter the Underwater Tunnel Aquarium, making it a fun and inexpensive place to visit.
