Introduction to the Cotton Industry: The cotton industry means spinning and weaving cotton. The states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are the major cotton-producing areas in India. The southern part of India almost gives 30-40% of India’s Cotton.
Telangana is the third largest southern state for producing cotton. India is the world’s major manufacturer of cotton. About 18% of the global cotton was produced by India.
Cotton is a very famous and most-used textile. Cotton is used for making comfortable textiles.

History of the Cotton Industry
India’s cotton Industry has been famous since ancient times. India enjoyed a monopoly in textile goods from 1500 BC to 1500 AD, where the clothes were famous. Indian cotton and silk textiles were in great demand, then the whole world brought textiles from there.
When the British arrived, India faced some troubles in the industrial revolution in Europe which led to the decline of Indian manufacturing.
The process of exporting the raw material, cotton to Britain starts with finished goods transported to India so that they can get more revenue. The first cotton textile industry was established by C.N Dewar in Mumbai in 1854.
This is a fast-growing cotton textile industry that rates the demand for Indian goods during the American Civil War.
The Economy of the Cotton Industry
It is one of the largest and most important sectors in the economy which gives foreign exchange earning output more networking profit and employment in India. Contributes around 10% percent of industrial production. It employs almost 7% of the population. It is so long profitability no food crop in the world it employs almost 250 million people worldwide.
Location of Cotton Industry
Cotton is a pure material that can be used to develop the cotton textile industry and is a great market in India. Some most important things that affect the cotton textile industry location or raw material, are proximity to the market, moist weather, capital skill, cheap labor, transport, seaport export facility, and the domestic and international markets.

Three types of Cotton textile industry
- Cotton Mills Mills is considered the main producer of cotton goods. Earlier it was mainly used for making 80% of Cotton goods made from mills, now it has been reduced to 10%.
- Power loom is the power loom sector played by the rule in meeting the clothes needs of the country. They produce a variety of clothes with various designs, and they produce 83% of the court’s total clothes production.
- Handloom: – It almost provides 12 percent of total production.
