Copyright Law Day 2024: Copyright Law Day is January 1. It’s a time for creative people to recognize how important copyright law is for making sure that their work can be used legally and to encourage others to support and respect copyright law. What did you know? The British government passed the first copyright law more than 311 years ago. Copyright law gives people certain rights.

respected for someone who writes something fresh. Some of these rights are the ability to copy, make new works, distribute, act and show in public, and distribute digitally. Copyright protects all kinds of writing, software, movies, and music. Copyrights protect the person who made the work and stop others from using it without their permission.

Copyright Law Day 2024: History

Copyright was first thought to only apply to books. The British Statute of Anne 1710 was the first law ever made about copyright. The United States Constitution protected copyrights in 1787, which is almost 250 years ago. This was done to “promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts.” Even back then, the goal of copyright was to encourage people to write new works by letting authors control and make money from them. Copyrights were usually territorial, which meant they only covered the land of a single state unless that state was a party to an international agreement.

But now, it doesn’t matter as much what region or even country people and works of art live in as it did in the past, because most countries agree on most kinds of copyright rules. A copyright usually lasts as long as the creator does, plus fifty to one hundred years after the author dies.

Piracy on the internet, which means getting works without paying for them, has become a common way to avoid paying the people who made them in the last few years. This is a form of copyright theft, and the huge number of people around the world who do it is having a huge impact on many businesses. According to a story in the Guardian in early May 2014, movie companies lose about US$20.5 billion a year to internet pirates. Illegal downloading has also done a lot of damage to the software business.

Significance

You can protect your work both nationally and internationally when you copyright it. That means that no one in the world can use your work for anything without your approval.

Copyright lets you make copies, give them to other people, and put them on show. You could rent out any of these rights to a distributor and make money that way.

Copyright makes sure that people get paid for their artistic works, so people who make things are always motivated to make new things.
