The History of Bloody Mary Day
Many experts disagree on where the name “National Bloody Mary Day” came from. Some say it was named after Queen Mary I of England, Hollywood star Mary Pickford, or even a waitress named Mary who worked at the Bucket of Blood bar in Chicago. The name “bloody” comes from the fact that the drink looks mostly like tomato juice. Three different versions of the story of how it was made and given its name have been put forward:
1. In 1921, French waiter Fernand “Pete” Petiot said he came up with the Bloody Mary while working at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, which was a famous place for American students living abroad. Petiot named the drink after Queen Mary Tudor of England, who was known for putting protesters to death.
2. The renowned author James Rollins said that the Bloody Mary was first created in the Hemingway Bar at The Ritz Paris. Rollins wrote about this in Sigma Force 6.5: The Skeleton Key, a book that came out in 2010.
3. The 21 Club in New York City says it was the first place the Bloody Mary was made. There are two different stories about who made it: one says it was bartender Henry Zbikiewicz in the 1930s, and the other says it was comic George Jessel, who often went to the club. Jessel, who was known as the “Toastmaster General of the United States,” said he made the drink in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1927.
In the United States, one of the first recorded mentions to the drink was in This New York, a gossip piece written by Lucius Beebe in 1939. National Bloody Mary Day is on January 1. This is probably because many people were drinking and dancing on New Year’s Eve.
