Introduction of Ashok Gehlot: Ashok Gehlot held the position of Chief Minister of Rajasthan from December 1998 to December 2003, from January 2008 to December 2013, until this date. He was elected to represent the Sardarpura constituency in Jodhpur as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Rajasthan. 

In his role as national General Secretary for the Congress Party from March 2018 to 23rd January 2019, he oversaw the party’s organizational efforts and leadership development. The state of Gujarat came under his purview after his election to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly in 2017.

Personal life of Ashok Gehlot-

After his father’s demise, Laxman Singh Gehlot’s son Ashok Gehlot continued his family profession as a magician. He did several magical performances throughout India. Ashok Gehlot’s father was a national magic performer. Whether he is of the Mali or Saini caste is unknown.

Since Gehlot’s family had little political clout, he was raised in a humble environment. He holds a master’s degree in economics in addition to a bachelor’s degree in science and a law degree.

He and his wife, Sunita Gehlot, are the parents of a boy and a daughter. The patriarch’s son, Vaibhav Gehlot, entered politics and won a seat in the Lok Sabha from Jodhpur in 2019.

The political career of Ashok Gehlot

In 1977, he made his maiden run for the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, seeking the Sardarpura seat. He lost 4426 votes to Madhav Singh of the Janata Party by a margin. Since then, he has never again sought elective office.

Gehlot had to sell his motorcycle before he could make his first attempt for public office. In 1980, he sought and won election to the Lok Sabha for the Jodhpur electoral district. He won by a margin of 52,519 votes. He was named Union Minister in 1984. He ran for election from Jodhpur but lost that year’s election.

The Congress party only won 56 seats in the state assembly in 2003. Because of his reputation as a peacemaker within Congress, Gehlot was sworn in as Chief Minister for a second time to keep things stable.

This happened following the 2008 election for the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, in which the Congress fell four seats short of a majority.
