Edge4Vets Gives Miami Vets An Edge For A Job At MIA

E4VvvsaEdge4Vets, a national jobs prep program for veterans, is joining forces with employers at Miami International Airport to prepare Miami veterans for aviation jobs at MIA with a resiliency workshop on May 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop is being sponsored by Carnival Corp and will be hosted by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department in the airport’s North Terminal D Fourth Floor Auditorium.

Offered by the Human Resiliency Institute at Fordham University, Edge4Vets teaches veterans how to translate their military skills into tools for the civilian workforce.  The program helps them become “job ready,” then connects the “prepped” veterans to jobs with airlines, concessions, retail, security, ground transportation companies and more.

The upcoming workshop at MIA will help veterans identify the specific values and skills they developed in the military and apply them to job opportunities with Edge4Vets partner companies, including American, Delta, HMS Host, JBT Services, Hudson, CAS, Republic Metals, Swissport, Fed Ex, Brinks and others. Employees from these companies will participate in the workshop as mentors to provide feedback and support to the veterans and help speed them to “job readiness.”

“One out of every four jobs in Miami-Dade County is directly or indirectly supported by MIA, and we aim to grow that number by partnering with Fordham’s Edge4Vets and connecting local veterans to the many job opportunities at our airport,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. González. “As a retired U.S. Army officer, I understand the challenges that veterans face when entering the civilian workforce, as well as the strengths they bring to the workplace. Well-trained, hardworking military veterans can become strong contributors to our growing global gateway.”

A follow-up workshop will be offered May 20 at MIA during which Human Resources representatives from partner companies will provide support to match veterans to job opportunities at MIA and at Carnival.

Once a base for the program has been established, leaders at MIA will work with Edge4Vets and it’s aviation industry partners at Airports Council Int’l – NA to expand the program into a national model for incorporating veterans into airport workforces across the U.S.  Edge4Vets was created by Tom Murphy who as a VP at St Thomas University in the 1990s created the Miami Nice program for Miami’s hospitality industry.
