FGO’s English Language “The Consul” Is Affecting Nightmare

By Bill Hirschman, FloridaTheaterOnStage.com, Special to EyesOnNews.com, May 11, 2015 – Is it because Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Consul is in English that Florida Grand Opera’s production is so unusually effective? Is it the accessibility of the 20th Century setting or the still resonating themes of dehumanizing repression of a soulless bureaucracy? Is it the familiar sound of mid-century classical music? Whatever factor or factors are involved, FGO’s season closing production of what may be Menotti’s greatest work is somehow far […]

By Bonnie Gross, FloridaRambler.com, Special to EyesOnNews.com, May 5, 2015 – We don’t have mountains and most of our roads have no excuse to curve, but Florida still has scenery that is worthy of viewing through your windshield. Some of these scenic backroads can be used as alternatives to interstate highways. Others are good for folks […]

By Michelle F. Solomon, FloridaTheaterOnStage.com, Special to EyesOnNews.com, April 22, 2015 – A full moon hangs high above stage left, birds chirp. The quiet is interrupted by Carnies, three carnival act types who hoot and holler to the audience and begin to show off their wares. You’re in the middle of a sideshow, and these are the players: There’s the strong man, the clown […]

By Michelle F. Solomon, FloridaTheaterOnStage.com, Special to EyesOnNews.com, April 8, 2015 – If the House Theater of Chicago’s Death and Harry Houdini was about neglecting life in the pursuit of conquering death, The Magnificents is the other side of the coin. “The Magnificents is about a guy who is really trying to reclaim his life in the face of death,” says the House’s Artistic Director Nathan Allen. Allen wrote Houdini, which played the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Carnival Theater in 2012 as […]

“Women Playing Hamlet” Wryly Examines An Actor’s Inner Life

By Bill Hirschman, FloridaTheaterOnStage.com, Special to EyesOnNews.com, April 7, 2015 – “Inhabiting a role” is high praise invoked by drama teachers, directors and critics to describe when a performer melds so seamlessly with a part that it doesn’t seem that they are acting at all – even when they are employing every bit of craft they possess. For such a very funny play, the world premiere of Women Playing Hamlet at New Theatre digs deeply into that alchemical process when an […]
